The following guidelines are established by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and are subject to change. Please double check the TEA website for accuracy. Requirements for other states may differ from those listed.

Starting a Career (if you do not have a Bachelor's degree)

  • Decide the grade level and subject you would like to teach
  • Complete an educator preparation program (EPP). Options include:
    • Chemistry (Grades 7-12)
    • Computer Science (Grades 8-12)
    • Health Science (Grades 6-12)
    • Life Science (Grades 7-12)
    • Mathematics (Grades 4-8, 7-12)
    • Mathematics/Physical Science/Engineering (Grades 6-12, 8-12)
    • Mathematics/Science (Grades 4-8)
    • Physical Science (Grades 6-12)
    • Physics (Grades 7-12)
    • Science (Grades 4-8, 7-12)
    • Technology Applications (Grades EC-12)
    • Technology Education (Grades 6-12)
  • Pass certification exam

Changing Careers (if you have a Bachelor's degree)

  • Decide the grade level and subject you would like to teach
  • Select an approved Alternative Certification Program
  • Meet the screening criteria of the program
  • Develop a certification plan within the program
  • Obtain a teaching position
  • Apply for probationary certificate
  • Complete requirements for a standard certificate
  • Apply for a standard certificate
